Chapter Twenty-Three

“They’re calling you the Marry Matchmaker!” Nova’s elation successfully wiped out any lingering distress over Rebel. And the confusing tenderness Hunter sparked.

“Who is?” Callie asked, intrigued.

“That reporter from the Gazette? Vivian something. She’s dubbed you the Marry Matchmaker, writing about how your maid of honor dresses lead the wearer to their perfect match. Did you know it’s happened six times? I hadn’t realized that.”

“Birdy’s kept track,” Callie said, nodding.

“My best friend is the Marry Matchmaker! You need to start using that in your marketing.”

“I totally will.” Holy ceremony. With a moniker like that, she’d get more business for sure. Guaranteed if Hunter and Kennedy’s sister met their perfect matches. She took a second to put positive vibes out into the world.

“There’s sure to be more weddings next year,” Nova announced with enthusiasm, her eyes zeroed in on Hunter, like she expected him to reach groom status or else. “Speaking of weddings, we’re all set for the bachelor-bachelorette party, right?”

“Yes,” Hunter said, seeming unaffected by his sister’s expression or Callie’s new nickname. He turned to her. “You should come. I’m sure Kennedy would approve.”

“Already beat you to it, big brother. Kennedy said you are totally invited, Cal. There’s plenty of room in our cabin and we really want you there. Will you come?”

Hunter put his arm around her shoulders. “You deserve a weekend away. Come with us.”

Callie blinked back tears again. These people were more her family than her own, and being included meant more than she could say. Nova had mentioned the Big Sur weekend last week, hinting she wanted Callie to tag along, but now that it was official, she couldn’t say no.

She didn’t want to say no. These were her feel-good people. Especially Hunter. No. Not Hunter.

“Sounds good. Thank you.”

“Now how about I treat you two girls to some funch,” Hunter said, dropping his arm.

“Funch?” she and Nova said simultaneously.

“Fun at lunch.” He grinned, and gah, she couldn’t resist him when he did that.

She and Nova exchanged a look. “Burgers at Sutter’s?” they asked.

“Where else?”

The three of them did lunch, and it was just what Callie needed to get over the horseback-riding fail. On the solo walk back to the cottage afterward, she couldn’t stop thinking about the ambassador opportunity. She loved Windsong with every beat of her heart. She carried small-town pride and values with her every day. Somehow, she’d get on that horse and share much more than the activity in her article. She’d write about overcoming fears.

Feeling better about the future, she picked up her pace. The sun disappeared behind a big, puffy cloud. Wind rustled lightly through the trees lining the sidewalk.

“Callie, wait up!”

At the sound of Hunter’s voice, she turned to find him jogging toward her. He’d ditched his cowboy hat at the ranch, and as he came to a stop in front of her, he ran his fingers through his light brown hair. “Hey,” he said.

“Is everything okay?” she asked.

“Yeah, I just wanted to let you know when you’re ready to do the horse thing again, come find me.
